Wielding and Utilizing Power as a Leader of Color
In my 20+ years as both an executive and a leader, I find that oftentimes the term “privilege” can make many leaders uncomfortable and even awkward - particularly when it comes up in the context of their leadership role. I can personally recall experiencing that discomfort early on my leadership path. As a person of color, I was aware of when and how “privilege” showed up long before I even heard or understood the term. It wasn’t until I went to college and spent a semester abroad that I began to understand privilege. I understood that privilege was something that most of my classmates had while I was often and unexpectedly reminded that I did not.
Juneteenth
As with so many others across the country, SoJoGo was pleased by the recent passage of Juneteenth as a federal holiday and we hope you experienced a day of reflection, learning, and celebration of freedom. As this holiday gains national recognition, we are hopeful that it will also continue to be a positive force in the nation's EDI narrative. Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured
In his previous CEO role and career in community health, Oscar and a senior member of his staff, and in partnership with the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured, co-authored an issue brief about making the Affordable Care Act work with immigrant families. The issue brief was a leading resource for the U.S. Bureau of Primary Care, the 1,200 community health centers across the country, and for key change makers in public policy.
